The 44th amendment ensured democracy’s survival in India: Shanti Bhushan

It was forty years ago. On the night of 25th June 1975. The then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, rushed to the President Fakruddin Ali Ahmed she had hand-picked – to his residence. At an odd hour. To get the Emergency signed!

And many of us are painfully aware of the chaos and havoc that created in every walk of India’s life. Mint daily has chronicled many a facet of this emergency, and related to the present situation. My MA students of Journalism & Mass Communication at St Joseph’s College, Bangalore are planning for a special issue of The Beacon on 25 June.
